Chapter 11
“Girl, you gonna make me hurt somebody up there.”
I laughed at Anthony as I slipped into a pair of tennis shoes. I had changed from my work clothes into some jeans and a pink polo to get ready to head to Lady T’s.
Toya’s club had quickly become my hangout spot. I found myself going once or twice a week. The ladies and I had even met up there for food, drinks, music, and spoken word on Wednesday night twice.
Anthony jokingly accused me of meeting my lover at the club whenever I went.
“Whatever,” I said, still laughing. “You ain’t gotta hurt nobody. I keep telling you that don’t nobody want me but you.”
“And I keep calling ‘bullshit’ on that claim,” he said, coming up and standing behind me as I checked out my reflection in the mirror.
“Well,” I said, leaning into him, “I am still doing all of my wifely duties, like keeping the dinner hot and the bedroom hotter. So hush. You have nothing to worry about.”
“Mmm hmm.” He kissed me on my neck, then looked at our reflection in the mirror and smiled. “You know what? After all these years, we still look pretty damn good.”
“You better know it!” I said back, smiling.
He escorted me downstairs and to my car. Always a gentleman, he opened my door for me and moved aside so I could get in.
“Don’t make me come up there and kick somebody’s ass,” he said before closing the door.
I started the car and rolled my window down. “Boy, stop!” I said with a laugh. I lifted my head and met him halfway for a quick kiss before saying, “I won’t be out too long.”
“Have fun!”
I backed out of the garage and pressed the button on my remote to close the garage door behind me.
Thoughts of my husband quickly dissipated and were replaced by thoughts of Toya. It had been a few weeks since her soft opening, and I looked forward to seeing her when I could. The only time I had the opportunity was at the club.
She was always friendly. The flirting had stopped, and we talked more in a platonic manner. I wondered if what I shared with her had turned her off. I admitted to myself that I had mixed emotions about it. I should’ve been happy. I was getting what I had told her I wanted. However, I missed that devilish smile that had only been for me. I missed the look in her eyes that told me that she wanted me. I missed her lips.
“Snap out of it,” I told myself on more than one occasion. “You cannot have your cake and eat it, too.” So, I made it work with keeping it platonic. She had become a member of our crew, and we all enjoyed each other’s company when we got together at her club. So, I was satisfied with that. I had to be.
I was the first of the ladies to arrive at the club. We had decided to try our best to meet at least once a week.
